Two bank holidays in one month? Aren’t we lucky! We’re sure that many of you will be looking forward to ignoring your ‘Wake Up!’ alarm next Monday morning and enjoying lie in, and who wouldn’t? Bank holidays are a time to be productive, to relax or to enjoy a Great Little Break (hint hint).
But for some of us, a bank holiday weekend poses one very important question…what shall we do with our extra day off? We are wondering the same at Great Little Breaks, so we have racked our brains and come up with some creative bank holiday ideas.
1. Family days out…
Do you have younger children? Maybe the older kids are back home for the weekend? Take advantage of your extra day with some precious time together. Whether you decide to enjoy a last minute family getaway, to go for a long walk together or to catch up over a big roast dinner, an extra day off is the perfect opportunity to spend quality time with loved ones.
2. Bank Holiday on a budget?
There are plenty of attractions around the country that are either free or cost very little. From Birmingham’s Art Gallery to the Natural History Museum, the Merseyside Maritime Museum to London’s Science Museum, many fascinating museums across the country are open over the bank holiday weekend and are free to visit!
3. How about a festival?
A huge variety of exciting festivals take place across the country throughout the year, and the late May bank holiday weekend is no exception. Are you feeling foodie? Leeds annual Food and Drink Festival begins over the bank holiday weekend and celebrates mouth-watering cuisine and delicious drinks available in the city. If you’re looking for something a little more musical, the Exmouth Festival is running from 22nd May and is a free music and arts event held at Manor Gardens. How about London this weekend? From Saturday 23rd- Monday 25th May Meantime 'Brewfest' will welcome brewers from around the world for a weekend of beer tasting, delicious food and live music in Greenwich.
4. Explore a new city.
Have you ever felt the urge to just get in the car and drive to a city that you've never visited before? Well the next bank holiday weekend could be the perfect time to do just that. Whether you’re enjoying a spontaneous city trip with someone special, planning a road trip with a great group of friends or treating yourself to a solo day out, the UK has a range of exciting locations to choose from. Shop until you drop, explore some fascinating historic sites or enjoy the vibrant night life – there’s no excuse not to try something new!
5. Catch up on catch up!
If you feel like having a sleepy day in, there’s nothing better than a long lie in and spending hours on the sofa with your favourite TV series or film trilogy for company. Maybe you’re not up to date with the Street or the Square or need your Netflix fix? A long weekend is the perfect opportunity to sit back, relax and immerse yourself in your favourite on-screen world.
6. One for the thrill seekers.
Fancy an adrenaline fuelled weekend? Maybe you’re looking for something extra exciting? From Alton Towers to Thorpe Park, Oakwood Theme Park to Drayton manor, the UK has a number of brilliant parks to enjoy- read more in our blog, ‘Top Ten UK Theme Parks’.
7. The great outdoors…
With a large number of us working at desks Monday to Friday, it can be very refreshing to enjoy a change of scenery every so often. Leave the technology behind, put on your walking boots and head outdoors for the day. Mountains and hilly stretches, wonderful woodland areas, golden sandy beaches – there is so much of Britain’s beautiful countryside to explore.
Why not enjoy your bank holiday weekend from the tree tops? There are a number of places around the UK that offer high ropes courses and outdoor activities such as Go Ape or Aerial Extreme – perfect for adding something extra to your late May bank holiday!
8. A Great Little Break of course!
Why not treat your loved one to a romantic getaway? How about a gourmet dining experience with your best friend? You could discover something new on a heritage break? We are delighted to offer you a number of Great Little Breaks to choose from.
