Rossett Hall has not always been a hotel. It was originally the grand country seat of John Boydell and his family. The son of a land surveyor, John Boydell made his fortune in engraving and publishing in London and used his wealth to build Rossett Hall in 1750 as a Welsh retreat for his family.
Boydell was appointed Sheriff of the Hawarden estate near to Rossett and went on to become an Alderman in London and later became Mayor of London in 1790.The beautiful Georgian manor house remained in the Boydell family until the 1970s when it first became a hotel. As a building of historic and architectural interest Rossett Hall is now Grade II listed and is part of the more modern hotel complex situated in the charming village of Rossett.
A small footnote of local fable is that Lord Nelson courted Emma Hamilton at Rossett Hall when visiting Harwarden, but perhaps not unsurprisingly, this is not documented anywhere.
Today, Rossett Hall survives as part of the independently owned Rossett Hall Hotel but much of the original interior remains, including the stone cantilevered staircase, grand chandelier, classical fireplace and the lounge rooms. The stone staircase is said to have been designed by a Flemish prisoner of war, captured during the early years of the Napoleonic Wars. Rossett Hall is now a thriving independent hotel owned by Everbright Hotel Ltd. Everbright Hotel Ltd is committed to preserving the history of the Grade II listed part of the hotel as well as providing a warm and relaxing environment for our guests.
